There's so much natural beauty to be explored around Brighton and Howell, including an extensive collection of trails which take you deep into the heart of nature. Ranging from shorter trails in parks packed with amenities to long, winding hikes at nature centers and recreation areas which cover thousands of acres, there's sure to be a trail that suits your style.     Brighton Recreation Area
    is one of the largest destinations on our list, checking in at just under 5,000 acres. With so much space to explore, you can see a wide range of natural habitats here, from dense forests to rolling hills and vibrant wetlands. Follow one of the marked trails which stretch for several miles, or chart your own path with a nature walk around one of the three large, scenic lakes which can be found within Brighton Recreation Area.

  • Kensington Metropark – 4570 Huron River Pkwy., Milford, MI 48380
    Looking for a paved trail that's easier on the legs, while still offering extensive opportunities to explore Michigan's natural beauty? Kensington Metropark is home to an 8.5-mile, paved hiking and biking trail, which circles around Lake Kent. The waterfront scenery makes this a very popular place for hikes, jogs, and nature walks, while the park's extensive list of amenities ensures that there's plenty more to enjoy outdoors after your hike.

  • Island Lake Recreation Area – 6301 Kensington Rd., Brighton, MI 48116
    Hiking and mountain biking are just the start of what you can enjoy at Island Lake Recreation Area, a 4,000-acre park that consists of dense, mature forests and open brushland. There are more than 23 miles of hiking trails here, most of which are open for mountain biking, as well. This park also has access to the Huron River Water Trail, perfect for a canoe or kayak adventure.

  • Huron Meadows Metropark – 8765 Hammel Rd., Brighton, MI 48116
    In the winter, Huron Meadows Metropark is a very popular destination for cross-country skiing. As spring dawns, the trails here draw hikers from across Brighton and Beyond. You'll find over 11 miles of trails here to be explored, including a trail that winds its way around the scenic 18-hole golf course located within the park.

  • Howell Nature Center – 1005 Triangle Lake Rd., Howell, MI 48843
    Howell Nature Center
    is an excellent choice if you hope to spot wildlife during your hike. The team here helps more than 4,000 injured birds and mammals every year, many of which are released back into Howell Nature Center once they're healthy enough. While you're here, check out the 500-foot zip lines, two large adventure courses, and fun play spaces for younger kids.

  • Pinckney Recreation Area – 8555 Silver Hill Rd., Pinckney, MI 48169
    If you're looking for the largest natural space to explore, it's tough to top Pinckney Recreation Area, which checks in at over 11,000 acres. This area is a great choice if you'd like to combine your hike with a spring camping trip. They offer trailside camping at a number of prime locations around the park, perfect for spending pleasant spring nights under the stars.
