If there's one term our real estate agents are famous for using, it's "curb appeal." Curb appeal refers to the appearance of your home from, well, the curb. A home with great curb appeal draws you in. Not only is it tidy and well-kept, but it appears stylish and balanced. Whether you're thinking of selling your home or just getting settled into a new one, it pays to improve your curb appeal. A house with great curb appeal will attract more buyers, and it will also feel more like home. So, how do you boost your curb appeal? Start by following these five steps.
- Improve Your Lawn
The greener the grass, the more appealing your home. There are plenty of ways to improve the appearance of your lawn without ripping it all out and starting over. Start by spreading a slow-release weed killer in the spring. Look for a formula that comes with fertilizer mixed in, so you get two benefits in one.
If your lawn is uneven, consider having it rolled. If there are bald patches, spread some grass seed over them. Cover the grass seed in straw, and water it daily. It should germinate within a few days, and once the blades appear sturdy, you can remove the straw.
- Add Colorful Flowers
Ideally, you want a variety of colors in your front yard in order to add appeal. The easiest way to add color is with flowers. You can plant some colorful annuals directly in your garden beds. Or, if you would rather not dig around in the dirt, simply set some pots of flowers in your garden beds or to the sides of your front stoop.
- Maintain Your Front Door
The front door is often the focal point of a home's facade. It's also the last thing someone sees right before they enter your home. So, if your front door is at all damaged or dull, improving it will improve your curb appeal.
If you have a wood front door, giving it a new coat of paint can make a world of difference. You may also consider replacing an older door that no longer latches well or has failing seals.
- Include Good Lighting
Good lighting can make sure your home has good curb appeal throughout the evening and not just in the daytime. Install some solar lights along paths, and put a sconce to either side of the door.
Consider putting your lights on timers so they automatically turn off later at night. You could also use motion sensors to ensure they only turn on when someone is close by.
- Get a Great Mailbox
A mailbox can be more than functional! It can also be a vital element that gives your home great curb appeal. If your current mailbox is old, rusty, or otherwise in poor condition, replacing it will give your home an instant facelift.
There are two directions you can go when choosing a fashionable mailbox. You could pick one that emphasizes your own interests. For example, if you love barns, you could choose a barn-shaped mailbox. Or, you could pick one that accentuates and reflects the colors and styles seen elsewhere in your home's facade.
