Pi Day

Pi Day, observed each year on March 14, may have originated to spotlight a mathematical principle. In reality, people celebrate by indulging in the similar-sounding pastry that's one of the country's more versatile and beloved treats. Our real estate agents plan to get their pi(e) on at these great bakeries around Livingston County.

  • Grand Traverse Pie Company - 9912 E. Grand River Ave., Brighton, MI 48116
The baked goods from Grand Traverse Pie Company represent nature, community, and all the elements that make Michigan so special. When founders Mike and Denise Busley yearned for a passion and purpose that was missing from their high-powered jobs in California, they returned home and discovered those qualities by opening Grand Traverse Pie Company. Their signature pie, the Grand Traverse Cherry Crumb, features the tart Montmorency cherries for which Michigan is known. Hours are 8 a.m. - 7 p.m. weekdays, 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Sunday.

  • M Street Baking Co. - 117 N. Michigan Ave., Howell, MI 48843
It's never wrong to have pie for breakfast, especially when it's one from M Street Baking Co. Their Rice Krispie Treat pie satisfies a dream held by "kids" of all ages. Enjoy the original version, or choose one with rainbow-hued layers. RKT pies can be custom-decorated for any special occasion. The Fruity Pepples pie also cures that craving for childhood comfort. These are just a few of the whimsical and creative baked goods in rotation on M Street's menu. Hours are 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. daily.

  • No More Belly Aching - 10049 Grand River Ave., Ste. 100, Brighton, MI 48116

In addition, they're expanding the selection of egg-free vegan products. Pies come in popular flavors such as apple, blueberry, cherry, and chocolate silk. Pre-made gluten- and dairy-free pie crusts are offered for DIY bakers. No More Belly Aching is open 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Saturday.

  • Back Road Bake Shed - Howell, MI 48843
Tracy Earl developed a love of baking after the birth of her now-teenage daughter Peyton. Using her past experience as a business owner, Tracy turned her newfound skills into Back Road Bake Shed. Best-selling pies include strawberry and bourbon sweet potato. If you're one of the many people who consider cheesecake to meet the definition of "pie," check out Back Road's cranberry-orange, gingerbread, and raspberry white chocolate flavors. Tracy has temporarily moved operations back to her home kitchen while searching for a new storefront, so visit the website or call to place orders.

  • Marv's Bakery - 10730 E. Grand River Ave., Brighton, MI 48116
Can a bakery and a butcher shop peacefully coexist? For more than half a century, Marv's Bakery has proven that they can, and quite successfully. On one side, the pastry kitchen produces top-quality baked goods, including pies in flavors such as apple caramel walnut, peach, and lemon meringue. The other side of the space holds a full-service butcher shop with beef, poultry, pork, lamb, and veal, along with fresh salads, side dishes, and other deli items. Marv's is open from 7:30 a.m. - 6 p.m. every day but Sunday.
