Whether you enjoy landscaping or think of it as a chore, you have to admit: landscaping work is easier with the right tools. You don't necessarily need to amass a big collection of tools, either. A few of the right gadgets can serve you all year round in multiple ways. If you're looking to build your collection of tools and gadgets for yard work, here are a few items our real estate agents recommend purchasing.
- Sprayer
A handheld sprayer with a pressurized chamber can be used to apply everything from fertilizer to herbicides. Look for one with a long hose and an adjustable nozzle. You'll want a more concentrated stream when you spray weeds and a wider stream if you apply fertilizer to a lawn or garden bed.
- Hand Weeder
A hand weeder is basically a tiny trowel. You can use it to pluck weeds out of the ground whenever you spot them. If you have one of these on hand and use it regularly, you should never end up with weeds that are too large to easily remove. You can cut back on your use of weed killer, too.
Look for a hand weeder with an ergonomic shaped handle. Make sure the edge of the blade is reasonably sharp so it cuts through soil and roots easily.
- Yard Cart
A small yard cart will come in handy when you're taking plants and tools to the back of the property. In the winter, you can use it to hold rock salt or your shovel. Look for a yard cart with sturdy wheels and a stainless steel frame. This way, it's less likely to rust out.
- Garden Rake
A garden rake is a tough, metal rake with sturdy teeth. You can use it to rake thatch out of your lawn, to smooth the top of your garden beds, and even to break up loose soil.
Visit a garden store, and you'll see that many modern garden rakes have padded, offset handles. This makes it easier to use the rake with some force since you get plenty of leverage.
- Gardening Apron
This might technically be a piece of apparel and not a tool, but it will still come in handy. A gardening apron made from tough nylon or neoprene can give you a place to stash small tools while you work in the yard. Look for one with plenty of pockets to hold your trowel, pocket knife, and seed packets.
- Adjustable Hose Nozzle
The right hose nozzle can make it so much easier to water your plants, fill buckets, and rinse your gutters. Look for one with at least four or five different pressure settings. A nozzle that you do not have to constantly squeeze tends to be easier to use. There are some awesome plastic ones on the market, but one with metal internal parts is likely to be more durable.
- Coil Hose
Upgrade your garden hose to a coil hose. These hoses wind up into a compact coil when you are not using them, which makes for easier storage in the winter. It's also easier to drain the water from a coil hose than from a standard hose. They come in multiple lengths, but you're best off buying a longer one so you can reach more of your yard.
If you build a collection with the tools above, you'll have a much easier time taking care of your yard and gardens. Contact us if you are still looking for homes for sale nearby. Our real estate agents can guide you through the process with ease.
