Summer is the perfect season to do simple home improvement projects, such as painting. It's amazing how a fresh coat of paint can transform a space or give it more character. You don't have to stick to indoor painting, either. Painting outdoor features like your fences, porch, and deck can improve your home's curb appeal. If you're not sure what to paint first, our real estate agents are ready to share a few suggestions.
- Paint Your Flower Pots
Do you have flower pots sitting outside? If they are looking a little old and discolored, consider giving them a coat of paint.
Start by scrubbing the pots to clean them. Once they are thoroughly dry, apply a coat of acrylic paint. Let it dry before applying a second coat. Wait at least a day, and then spray the painted pot with a polyurethane finish. This will seal it and prevent water damage.
- Paint Your Front Door
Your front door makes a first impression. Is it a good one? A new coat of paint on your front door could transform your home's entire facade.
Choose a color that coordinates with the rest of your home but also stands out. For example, if you have tan siding, a cobalt blue front door can look bold and lovely.
- Paint Your Fence
Wooden fences not only look better when painted, but they also last longer. If you plan on painting your fence, always start with a good, oil-based primer. This will help the paint stick, which is really important on a surface, such as a fence, which gets wet all of the time.
Once your primer is dry, follow it up with a coat of outdoor paint. You don't have to stick with white, although that's traditional. More and more homeowners are choosing alternative fence colors, especially for smaller decorative fences.
- Paint Your Ceilings
A bright, white ceiling can really open up a room. if you wish to paint your ceilings, start by taking off the walls on all four sides. Then, use a paintbrush to cut in the edges before rolling the paint across the middle of the ceiling.
You don't necessarily have to paint your ceilings white. Any shade that is lighter than your walls will look amazing.
- Paint an Accent Wall
This project can add a pop of color to your living room, dining room, or even bedroom. Choose a color that stands out against the color of your other walls. For example, if your walls are all gray, a purple accent wall would look lovely.
Move everything away from the wall, put down a drop cloth, and go for it. You might want to tape off the ceiling and other walls, but if you have good brush control, you can often skip this step.
- Paint Your Cabinet Doors
Are you tired of the color scheme in your bathroom or kitchen? Painting the cabinet doors can really help. It's usually easiest to remove the doors, take them outside, and remove the hardware. Give them a good scrub with dish soap to remove any greasy residue first.
For cabinet doors, try to use an enamel paint or one with a glossy finish. This will make the painted doors easier to clean. Wait for the paint to dry thoroughly before putting any hardware back on.
