Grilling Tips

Summer is here, and that means it's time to get grilling. Cooking on the grill is not only a great way to prepare delicious food. It's also an opportunity to spend more time outside in your backyard, chat with friends, and simply enjoy the outdoors. If you're ready to get grilling, check out these top tips from our real estate agents, and take your grilling game to the next level.

  • Clean Your Grill Grates
Grill grates have a habit of accumulating grease and carbon. You don't really want this buildup on your food, so it's a good idea to clean your grates before every grilling session. An easy way to do so is with a ball of aluminum foil. Wait for the grill to heat up, grab the foil ball with your tongs, and rub.

With this method, you don't have to worry about leaving a chemical residue on your grates – or about leaving behind wire brush bristles.

  • Use a Meat Thermometer
Two of the biggest grilling errors are overcooking the meat and undercooking the meat. A thermometer can prevent both mistakes. For food safety purposes, the USDA recommends cooking all poultry to 165ºF, all beef and pork to 145ºF, and fish to 145ºF.

  • Avoid Cross-Contamination
You don't want raw meats to come into contact with cooked foods, as they could expose them to bacteria that cause food poisoning. Always store raw meats separately from cooked foods. Wash your hands thoroughly after touching raw meat and before touching prepared foods.

  • Choose Evenly Sized Cuts
If all of your burgers, chicken breasts, or steaks are the same size, they will cook more evenly and be done at the same time.

  • Season Liberally
When you grill, some of your seasoning is going to come off your foods and fall into the grill along with the fat or juices. So, be generous when you are seasoning your meats. Use a little more salt, herbs, and spices than you would use if you were cooking with a stove or oven.

  • Preheat Your Grill
Preheating your grill will ensure your food cooks evenly, and it will also keep food from sticking to your grates. If you have a charcoal grill, your coals will need at least 20 minutes to come up to temperature and burn down before you put food on. If you use a gas grill, make sure you turn it on about 10 minutes before you start cooking.

  • Only Flip Once
Repeatedly flipping your meat will cause more of the juices to drip out. So, when cooking on the grill, it is best to flip your meats only once.

  • Let Meats Rest After Cooking
Whether you're making burgers, steaks, or sausages, make sure you let them rest for about 5 minutes after grilling. This will allow the heat and juices to redistribute. Your meats will be more moist with this rest.

  • Only Brush Sauces On At the End
If you are using barbecue sauce on your food, make sure you only brush it on towards the end of cooking. If you brush it on too early, it will often scorch and burn due to the sugar content. It will also make a mess of your grill grates! One coat a minute before the food comes off and another coat after you remove it from the grill should do the trick.
