  • Michigan Challenge Balloonfest - Howell High School, 1200 W. Grand River Rd., Howell, MI 48843
For the 38th year, colorful floats will fill the air at the Michigan Challenge Balloonfest. Each morning and evening, the main event takes center stage as balloon pilots conduct launches and fly-ins. The fun doesn't stop in between, with carnival rides, live entertainment, an arts festival, kids' activities, and fireworks. Don't miss the Family Fun Tent, featuring Ben the Lego Man, the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum, and more. The Balloonfest takes place Friday, June 23, through Sunday, June 25. Admission is $5 per day or $10 for a weekend wristband.

  • Island Lake Triathalon - Island Lake State Recreation Area, 6301 Kensington Rd., Brighton, MI 48116
Experienced competitors and newbies alike will find the Island Lake Triathalon to be an exciting challenge. The three legs of the race include a 0.5-mile swim, 12.4-mile bike ride, and 3.1-mile run. Competitors can supersize the event by opting for the Olympic sprint, in which all distances are doubled. Participants receive a t-shirt, swim cap, and finish line medal. Those seeking a more modest workout can enter the duathlon or relay events. Race time is 8 a.m. on Saturday, June 3. Entry fees start at $115, and a State Park permit or passport is required.

  • T-Rex Sprint Triathalon Series - Island Lake State Recreation Area, 6301 Kensington Rd., Brighton, MI 48116
Can you outrun a stegosaurus? Pace yourself against prehistoric creatures during the T-Rex Sprint Triathalon Series. Beautiful Island Lake Recreation Area provides the setting for these monthly endurance races combining swimming, biking, and running. As you navigate the course, be on the lookout for triceratops and pterodactyls along the way! Afterward, receive a custom finisher's medal and unwind at the post-race party. Warm up for the event during training sessions with separate levels for beginners and experienced triathletes. Races take place on the last Wednesdays of May, June, and July and the third Wednesday of August, with start time at 6 p.m. Entrance fees are $67 for early registration and $75 day of the race. A State Park permit or passport is also required.

Celebrate Livingston County's claim to fame in the world of fruits and vegetables at the Howell Melon Festival. 2023 marks the 63rd year of this popular event, which is returning to Grand River in downtown Howell. In other exciting news, the festival has obtained sponsorship to bring back the Mainstage for a free concert on Saturday, August 19. What else is on the schedule? The Howell Melon 5K run, which includes the Melon Roll for toddlers, starts at 6 p.m. on Friday, August 18. Official festival dates are August 18-20, but don't forget about the lead-up events, including the Classic Golf Scramble on Friday, July 21, followed the next day by the Howell Melon Ball.
