With spring bringing the Howell Nature Center back to full bloom, this is a great time of year to visit. From summer camps to a wildlife rehabilitation clinic, there's a lot to take in here, and our real estate agents are excited to show you around!

About the Howell Nature Center

Founded in 1963, the Howell Nature Center is a great destination for outdoor recreation, but it's also much more than that. With a mission to teach people to be faithful caretakers of one another and the world around us through mutual love and respect, the Howell Nature Center offers many ways to connect with nature.

To that end, they offer a wide range of educational programs, classes, summer camps, and other events. The Howell Nature Center also includes Michigan's largest wildlife rehabilitation clinic and Livingston County's only teaching zoo.

Spanning 230 acres of rolling woods, wetlands, and meadows around the shores of Pleasant Lake, the Howell Nature Center is open daily to the general public from 10 am to 5 pm year-round. Be sure to check their online calendar for a full list of upcoming events!

Activities and Attractions

There are many ways to experience the Howell Nature Center, and it's the kind of place that requires multiple visits to truly explore fully. Some of the best things to see and do at the nature center include:

  • Wild Wonders Wildlife Park
Currently home to more than 70 wild creatures, including bobcats, bald eagles, and great horned owls, the Wild Wonders Wildlife Park is one of the central features of the Howell Nature Center. The park serves as both a zoo and a wildlife rehabilitation facility and has become the home of many native Michigan animals who, for a variety of reasons, could not be released back into the wild. Most were either injured in the wild, bred in captivity, or were kept illegally as pets, and now serve as Animal Ambassadors in the Howell Nature Center.
  • Alexandria's NatureScape & The Tree House
Offering a wide range of activities for kids to have fun while learning about nature, Alexandria's NatureScape is a wild, creative children's play area that includes waterfalls, sand dunes, climbing ropes, and a variety of activities like shelter building and water painting. The Tree House, a towering structure high above the NatureScape, spans 7,000 square feet and includes ramps, platforms, and suspension bridges. Alexandria's NatureScape & The Tree House are open May through October.

  • Hiking Trails & Picnic Area
The Howell Nature Center offers a meandering network of wooded trails that are ripe for exploration. The trails provide opportunities to see a wide variety of plant and animal life that resides in the Nature Center's diverse landscape. The terrain is mostly easy and accessible to all hikers of all fitness levels. There is also a shady picnic area, which is a great place to stop for lunch during your visit.

  • High Adventure
With zip lines, a high ropes course, a giant swing, and an outdoor climbing tower, the Howell Nature Center offers ample opportunities for Adventure Education in the trees. Reservations are required, but aerial experiences are available for groups of all sizes. Age requirements vary, but zip lining is open to ages 5 and up.
