Upcycle 2023

Upcycling is a terrific way to give an item new life if you want to upgrade your home's appearance but need to stick to a budget or want to minimize the number of home items you send to the landfill. Our real estate agents know that upcycling can help you turn old, worn-out pieces into furnishings that you're proud to have in your home. Check out a few upcycling projects to do in 2023.

  • Add a Pop of Color to Your Furniture
If you want to add a dash of color to your furniture, you can do so with a little paint or wallpaper. Consider painting the back portion of your bookcase a different color, or use wallpaper to add a fun pattern or print to the interior of a piece of furniture. Or, if you want to integrate color using a more toned-down technique, leave the outside a neutral or more subdued color and paint the interior of the drawers a brighter hue.
  • Modernize a Piece by Painting it a Whole New Color
Have an older item that's still structurally sound? Update its look so that it has a more modern appearance by painting the whole piece a new, trendy color. If you decide to tackle this project, make sure to clean and sand the piece properly so that the new paint will adhere to the surface. Plan on taking your time and using multiple coats to create an even, picture-perfect finish. Don't forget the hardware! You can paint the existing hardware so the tone compliments the piece's new color, or you may replace it entirely.
  • Revamp a Mirror by Upgrading the Frame
A mirror is an excellent decorative item to use in nearly any room. Not only does a mirror help the room appear larger, but it reflects the light in the space so that the room has more natural lighting. Change the look of the mirror's frame so that it better suits your style by painting it, staining it, or decorating it with a collection of objects. Shells, stones, gemstones, flowers, tiles, and sequins are just a few options you can use.
  • Makeover a Piece with a Stencil
A stenciled design is an easy way to upgrade a piece so that it's more interesting and better suits your style. Use the stencil on the drawers or cabinets to add visual interest, or use it on the top of the furniture to create a playful pattern.
  • Cover Upholstered Pieces
If the fabric on your chairs, couches, bedframe, or benches is stained or torn, replacing it with a more contemporary option allows you to extend the piece's lifespan while upgrading the item's appearance and making it more comfortable. Don't worry about making sure all the upholstered pieces in a room perfectly match; a variety of fabric textures and colors can also make a room feel cozy and inviting.

With a little time and a few materials, you can breathe new life into your home's old furniture and decor. Interested in a home with more space for your creative projects? Contact us to explore your options!
