Basement Updates

Your basement can be so much more than an empty space that you use for storage now and then. You can transform it into a second living room, a craft room, or even a spare bedroom. Our real estate agents have seen lots of usable, well-finished basements over the years. If a basement upgrade is on your to-do list for 2023, we have some tips and recommendations that are sure to come in handy.

  • Improve the Lighting
Most basements are rather sparse and dimly lit. So regardless of how you plan on using your basement, upgrading the lighting is a good place to start. Replace single overhead lights with chandeliers that have multiple bulbs. Install some accent lighting under railings, or add track lighting around the perimeter of the room. If you don't want to run new wiring, you can even use battery-powered tap lights. There are stick-on options that are affordable, long-lasting, and easy to place.

  • Use Light, Neutral Wall Colors
When painting walls in the basement, be sure to use light, neutral colors. They reflect more light and make the space feel more open. If you want to add pops of color, do so with the furniture and decor. This approach also makes it easier to re-decorate the basement for a different purpose later on if you so desire. You can just replace the furniture and accents without having to repaint them.

  • Create a Guest Suite With Bunk Beds
If you are thinking of using the basement as a spare bedroom, here's a way to make it even more versatile. Instead of setting up one large bed, set up two sets of bunk beds. This way, up to four guests can stay in your basement, which means you could have a whole family stay with you if desired. Include other amenities to make the space more suite-like. A small dining table, a desk and chair, and a mini-fridge will help guests feel at home.

  • Build a Wine Cellar
If you enjoy wine, building a wine cellar is the perfect way to utilize the basement. Basement temperatures tend to stay cool all year long, which is ideal for wine storage. You can go as far with this as you like. For small wine collections, you may just want to set up shelving on one wall. For larger collections, you may want to build a whole room, complete with a bar, tasting setup, and maybe even a fridge for chilling your white.

  • Set up a Home Gym
The basement is often the perfect place to set up your home gym. It's cooler than the rest of the home, and it's out of the way, so family members won't be bothered by the sound of the treadmill or bike. Put down some foam flooring; the kind that you piece together from oversized "tiles" works well. Then, slowly start building your collection of equipment. Just a treadmill and a set of free weights will do the trick in the beginning.

  • Design a Playroom
If you're tired of your kids' toys being strewn about upstairs, why not turn the basement into a playroom? Most basements have room for larger toys, such as slides and indoor jungle gyms. Put down a padded rug so your kids have something to sit on, add some colorful paintings to the walls, and you're good to go.

Hopefully, these tips and ideas serve you well as you remodel or update your basement. Before you start your home improvement project, be sure to check if you need permits to make the improvements, if required, in your area.
