Gardening Tips

You're ready to start your own garden, but you worry that your lack of a green thumb will hinder your progress before you even get your flowers or vegetables planted.

Fortunately, starting a garden doesn't have to be complex or time-consuming. Our real estate agents know that there are several options ideal for a novice gardener.

Check out these easy-to-grow plants that are excellent for beginner gardens or anyone looking for low-maintenance landscaping.

  • Sweet Alyssum
Sweet alyssum is a perennial flower that returns each year. This gorgeous flower comes in beautiful shades of white, pink, and purple and boasts a lovely scent. It grows best in sunny areas, but a little bit of shade is okay too. The resilient flowers are frost resistant and help attract pollinators to your garden.
  • Delosperma
Delosperma is a perennial with a long bloom season that lasts from spring to the first frost of fall. It's a low-growing flower that can help minimize erosion, and it's attractive to pollinators. This colorful flower features hardy magenta-pink flowers that turn darker in the fall. Since delosperma is technically a succulent, it has low water needs and will thrive even in poor-quality soil.
  • Marigolds
Marigolds are a popular addition for many gardeners thanks to their large, cheery blooms that come in vivid shades of yellow, orange, and white. While marigolds are annuals (this means that they won't return next year), they'll bloom from spring until the first frost of fall. They're sturdy flowers that can easily survive hot temperatures and periods of low precipitation.
  • Begonias
Begonias are another annual that will continuously bloom for months with minimal effort from you. They come in a wide variety of colors, including pink, red, white, salmon, and orange. While some varieties will grow in the sun, begonias are better suited to a shady area of your yard.
  • Radishes
If you're ready to start your vegetable garden and want to see progress as quickly as possible, radishes are a terrific addition. Radish plants mature extremely fast and produce within a few weeks.
  • Spinach
Spinach is another fast-growing plant that's simple to care for. It will also survive cooler weather, including temperatures below freezing. Deciding when spinach is ready to harvest is also easy; if the leaves look large enough to eat, you can pick them.
  • Zucchini
While zucchini does need a decent amount of space to grow, this is its only real demand. It will tolerate full sun areas and once the zucchini appear, they're quickly ready to harvest.
  • Tomatoes
Tomato plants welcome hot temperatures, making them a terrific addition during the muggy summer months. For the easiest growing experience, look for a disease-resistant determinate variety, as these plants tend to be the simplest to care for. A determinate tomato plant grows to a certain height, produces a lot of tomatoes, and then stops.
