Lake Living

In the 1950s, Michigan became known as the "Water Wonderland." With a total of 26 beautiful lakes, Livingston County certainly earns that nickname as well. Our real estate agents appreciate these five wonderful advantages of lake living in Livingston County.

  1. Fishing
One of the great things about fishing is that actually catching a fish is almost secondary. You can spend quality time with family and friends, sharing stories and laughs, or you can head out on your own for some quiet reflection.

Of course, if you do catch some fish, it's a bonus of bragging rights and good eating. Lake Chemung is a plentiful source of largemouth bass, Northern pike, and bluegill. Whitmore Lake is also a popular spot with anglers, featuring rock bass, smallmouth bass, and yellow perch.

  2. Boating and Paddlesports
Enjoy the sense of freedom that comes with being out on the open water, feeling the sun on your back and the breeze in your hair. There are a number of lakes in Livingston County for zippy motorboats and jet skis, or you can go at a more relaxed pace with canoeing, kayaking, and paddleboarding.

Not ready to invest on your own? NautMi on the River rents kayaks, paddleboards, and canoes and sells the best hand-dipped ice cream cones around. If you're heading out with your family or a large group, Mac's Marina rents 10-person pontoons for day-long fun on Whitmore Lake.

  3. Dining
Whether you're on a romantic date night or a family outing, food somehow tastes better when you have a stunning view to go with it. There's nothing like the backdrop of a Michigan sunset as you dine on fresh seafood, juicy steaks, or luscious pasta.

Ponemah Lakeside Lounge has a heated patio so you can enjoy the view year-round, even when the weather is chilly or rainy. If you get hungry while you're out on the water, pull your boat up to the iconic Zukey Lake Tavern for a burger, nachos, or pizza at their spectacular rooftop deck.

  4. Hiking and Biking
Lakes are usually surrounded by forests, meadows, and other undeveloped land that remain prime spots for getting back to nature. Waterfront parks generally feature a network of paved or primitive trails where hikers and bikers can explore the land and watch for wildlife.

With nearly 5,000 acres of hills, lakes, and forests, the pet-friendly Brighton State Recreation Area is a favorite location for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. For those seeking all-inclusive opportunities, Island Lake Recreation Area has off-road electronic track chairs that provide more accessibility than wheelchairs.

  5. Camping
While Livingston County has many charming B&Bs, there's nothing like camping to truly get away from it all. Campgrounds have varying levels of amenities, so you can choose any style you prefer.

Historic Waldenwoods Family Recreation Resort, once visited by noted figures including Henry Ford and Thomas Edison, offers everything from luxury villas to rustic cottages to grassy campsites in one location. Stay more simply at Pinckney Recreation Area, which has regular campsites and rustic camping on Crooked Lake, and backpack camping along the Potawatomi Trail.

Whether you prefer active or cultural pursuits, Livingston County has something for everyone. Contact us at Griffith Realty to learn more.
