The Brighton Recreation Area is a nearly 5,000-acre county park with a variety of trails to traverse. The Murray Lake Trail is one of the most popular loops at the park, offering 3.4 miles of waterfront scenery around Murray Lake. While you'll need a mountain bike for traveling this trail, it features few elevation changes and makes for a fairly simple, relaxing ride with ample opportunities to take a rest while enjoying the scenery. - Torn Shirt Mountain Biking Trail – 6360 Chilson Rd., Howell, MI 48843
Also located within the Brighton Recreation Area, the Torn Shirt Mountain Biking Trail offers a more challenging ride suitable for advanced mountain bike riders. It's a one-way, 6-mile trail that will take you over the hills and through the forest, with nature all around you. The challenge of this trail comes from the varying terrain and the more than 1,100 feet of uphill riding that you'll accomplish along the way. - Kensington Metropark – 4570 Huron River Pkwy., Milford, MI 48380
For a trail closer to Milford, try a visit to Kensington Metropark. This is another of Livingston County's largest parks, checking in at over 4,500 acres. There are two paved biking trails here, one of which stretches for 8.5 miles around Kent Lake and a shorter, 3.4-mile trail that leads to Milford. For mountain bikers, there is a 2-mile mountain biking trail that will take you straight to the Proud Lake State Recreation Area. - Island Lake East Loop – 6301 Kensington Rd., Brighton, MI 48116
The next two entries on our list come from the expansive Island Lake Recreation Area. This park is another popular destination for mountain biking, with easier trails that are suitable for every experience level. The Island Lake East Loop is a circular trail that runs for 5.4 miles and is filled with natural scenery. Your journey starts with a trip along the Huron River before progressing further into the dense, beautiful forests that cover much of the park. - Island Lake Blue Trail – 6301 Kensington Rd., Brighton, MI 48116
If you want a ride that features waterfront scenery from start to finish, it's tough to top the Island Lake Blue Trail at the Island Lake Recreation Area. This is one of the longer trails in the area, with a 9.2-mile loop that will take you for a trip along the Huron River before connecting with the Yellow Trail. You will find the entrance to the Blue Trail about 1.5 miles west of the entrance to the park.
