Houseplants

Houseplants can improve the look of your home by adding texture and color while also making its environment cleaner and helping you feel more at ease. But deciding where to put your houseplants can be tricky. In addition to placing them in a spot where they'll receive the right amount of light, you'll want to make sure they don't dominate a space or fade into the background.

Our real estate agents suggest some of the following great places for houseplants:

  • In a Corner
If you have a spare corner in an open space, large plants are a good option. Choose a leafy, bright, and tall plant like the ZZ or bird of paradise, or place several small to medium-sized plants in a corner for added visual interest. Small plants should only be used in one corner of the space, so it doesn't look messy.

  • As a Focal Point
Hang a plant above your bedroom windows to create a focal point that doesn't take up space on your dresser top or other surfaces. Choose one that drapes over the side to create a full, overflowing look. If you'd like to further the botanical look, put some small succulents on a bedside table or add some floral art or pillows to your decor.

  • In the Fireplace
If you have a fireplace that isn't functioning or one that you simply don't use, transform the space into a display of indoor plants. Choose plants in a range of sizes, using taller ones around the hearth and arranging smaller ones on the mantle. A large philodendron or monstera often works well around the hearth since they have good height and sculptural leaves that are visually interesting.

  • On the Windowsill
A windowsill garden is a great way to ensure that your plants get enough sunlight while adding some beauty to an area that usually isn't an eyecatcher. Try growing strawberries or herbs like mint and thyme, but if you don't like these options, flowers and ornamental plants can also work well.

  • On a Bookcase
A bookcase that's jam-packed and filled only with books looks cluttered and boring. Use it as a way to showcase indoor plants as you display them with books, knickknacks, and other interesting objects. A mix of plant textures, heights, colors, and more will add visual interest and texture while opening up the space.

  • In Front of a Large Window
Framing a large window with houseplants and greenery can improve the view inside and outside of your home. Use a woven basket planter for a tall, leafy tree while mixing in some hanging planters for a look that helps frame and put the focus on your window. When choosing plant varieties, make sure you select ones that can tolerate a lot of direct sunlight if that's what your window provides.

  • Over the Walls
Although it takes some time to grow, a creeping vine trailing up a wall can make an impressive statement. Use nails hammered into the wall to direct the vine into growing where you want it to. You can even guide it to grow into a loop, curve, or a pattern. Over time, the vine will grow on and around the walls and can even cover them if that's what you'd like.
