When you move into a new home, it's always fun to make it your own. This does not have to mean a total remodel, and it doesn't have to mean spending thousands of dollars, either. There are plenty of smaller home improvement projects that you can tackle on a weekend for a reasonable budget. Our real estate agents are excited to share the following weekend home improvement projects with you.
- New Towel and Robe Hooks
Take a look around your bathroom. Where would be the most convenient place to keep your towels and robes so that you can grab them quickly when you get out of the shower?
Once you've chosen the perfect location, visit a hardware store and shop for hooks that match your existing bathroom hardware. Mount them, and enjoy your convenient new setup. You won't have to tip-toe across the bathroom, dripping water on the floor as you reach for your towel anymore.
- Paint the Front Door
Painting your front door a different color can give your home an instant facelift. A gray home with a red front door, for instance, looks entirely different from a gray home with a white front door.
It's easiest to remove a front door if you remove it from the hinges first. But even this task should only take a few minutes, provided you have a screwdriver and someone to help you lift the door.
- Re-Caulk Your Tubs and Sinks
Caulk is meant to seal tubs and sinks and keep water from seeping in behind them. Unfortunately, caulk tends to wear out over time. If your caulk is peeling, chipping, or discolored, tear it all out and apply new caulk. This may not be the most aesthetic home improvement project, but it will save you from having to battle mold in the future.
- Replace Your House Numbers
Guests and delivery drivers rely on your house numbers to ensure they're in the right place. If your house numbers are looking chipped or worn, it should only take you a few hours to remove them, shop for new ones, and mount those new ones on the wall. You can even upgrade to solar-charged, back-lit numbers that are easier to read at night.
- Create a Bar Cart
This one is a little more intricate, but it's great for anyone who loves DIY projects. Convert an old bookshelf — maybe one you discover at a local consignment or thrift store — into a bar cart. You can paint it specifically to match your decor.
This guide from HGTV explains exactly what you need and the steps to follow as you create your own bar cart. If you can operate a screwdriver, you can handle this project.
