2022 Move

There are a thousand little details to take care of as you go from one house to another. It can easily get overwhelming. However, it's not so bad with a little bit of planning. Here are a few tips to make your move in 2022 as seamless as possible.

  • Start Early
The longer you've lived in your current place, the more things there are to pack up. If you put it off, you'll end up scrambling to get everything ready to go by the time moving day arrives. As soon as you know you're moving, start the packing process. You don't even have to have the new place picked out yet. Start by picking up the things you know you won't need for a while. Do a little bit every day. You'll greatly reduce the burden on yourself in the long run.

  • Make a Checklist
What needs to be done before moving day, on the day, and after? Make a list of tasks: packing things in boxes, hiring movers, transferring your mail to the new address, etc. Then make a list of supplies you'll need: things like boxes, tape, trash bags, and a dolly. Having everything written down in advance, and checking things off as you go, will help ensure you don't forget anything and reduce your overall stress.

  • Declutter
Not everything you own can or should go with you to the new place. Eliminating clutter means fewer boxes to worry about. Take a good, hard look at everything you own. Do you wear that shirt anymore? When was the last time you used that gadget? Separate everything into three categories: things you're keeping, things you're donating, and things you're throwing away. The load will be much lighter come moving day.

  • Label Everything
As you pack everything into boxes, write clearly on the top and sides of each box what's in it. Is it books? Tableware? Knickknacks and keepsakes? This way, you can tell at a glance where everything is. Not only does this help with unpacking, but it can also give clues as to how heavy each box is as your friends or movers load it onto the truck.

  • Get Help
Many hands make light work. Ideally, you should hire professional movers. They can deal with heavy boxes, bulky or cumbersome furniture, or whatever other difficulties there may be. They'll get your things moved from your old place to your new home as quickly and painlessly as possible. If you can't afford movers, then ask your friends. Get at least five or six to help you on moving day, and be prepared to buy them all lunch afterward, at the very least.

  • Clean Up
Once you've moved out of your old home, you need to give it a thorough cleaning. This is particularly important if you were renting, as it will need to be inspected to see what condition you've left it in. However, even if you owned the house, it needs to be clean and welcoming for the new owners - particularly since moving likely kicked up a lot of dust. Vacuum the floors, clean the bathrooms, wash the light plates and doorknobs, and make sure everything is as clean or cleaner as the day you moved in.
