Brighton Pet SittingIf you're planning on taking a trip that isn't pet-friendly, you'll need to make arrangements for your furry family members. One option is to hire a pet sitter. A pet sitter can care for your pets in a home-based environment where they're likely to be comfortable.

Our real estate agents suggest asking the following questions when choosing your pet sitter. You should also request an in-person meeting to see how the pet sitter interacts with your pets.

  1. What kind of animal experience do you have?
It's imperative to select a pet-sitter with experience taking care of the types of animals that you own or handling special situations that may apply to your pet. This is especially important if you own exotic animals or have pets with unique medical needs; you want to ensure that your pet-sitter knows how to properly handle a hamster or clean a fish tank. Or, if your diabetic dog requires insulin shots, you'll want a pet sitter with this type of care experience.
  1. Where do you care for the animals?
Some pet sitters only go to a client's home to provide animal care, while others are willing to host pets in their own homes. See what your potential pet sitter offers so that you can confirm it suits your preferences.
  1. What communication is the pet sitter willing to provide?
See how often your pet sitter is willing to provide an update on your pets. If you prefer morning and evening texts, complete with pictures and a synopsis of your pet's schedule, you'll want to avoid a sitter who prefers to check in only when there's an issue (and vice versa).
  1. What are your rates (and what factors impact these rates)?
You'll need to know how much to budget for your pet sitter. Some pet sitters charge a flat rate each day, regardless of how many times they go to your home, while others may charge per visit. You may also have to pay extra for lengthy walks or play sessions. Make sure that you understand when payment is due and what payment methods the pet sitter accepts.
  1. Do you have references from previous customers?
A qualified pet sitter is willing and able to provide references from their previous clients. Ideally, your pet sitter should be able to supply info for at least three references. Always check these references so that you know the pet sitter is reputable and provides an honest evaluation of their abilities.
  1. How far in advance do you book pet sitting slots?
You don't want to find yourself scrambling for pet care right before you need to leave for your trip; ask your pet sitter how far in advance they accept reservations and when they tend to book up. Some pet sitters may be able to accommodate last-minute requests, while others may need a couple of weeks' notice (especially around the holidays and during popular months for travel).
