Decluttering Your Kitchen

Whether you're a credentialed chef or a heater of canned soups and maker of grilled cheese sandwiches, you do all this and more in your kitchen. For many of us, it's the busiest room in the house. Thus, it tends over time to collect more unused stuff than other rooms. Every couple of years, go through your kitchen and ruthlessly bid farewell to the things you have never used or use so seldom that they're not worth the space they take up. Once you free up counter and shelf space, you'll find yourself enjoying your kitchen much more.

Organizing your drawers, cabinets, fridge, and the counter starts with decluttering. Here are some tips to get your decluttering started.

  1. Get rid of excess dishes, pots and pans, and glasses.
Do a survey of cookery and flatware, and what have you. Shed the excess, keeping only enough for basic cooking for and serving your family, and perhaps a few more if you plan to have company and visitors.

  2. Go through your drawer or cabinet full of plastic containers, tossing those without lids.
Don't you hate rifling through the drawer full of plastic containers, trying on lids that don't quite fit? Time to go through the drawer, tossing those without a lid to match, or those that are broken or cracked, into the recycling bin. Acquire an organizer for the remaining lids.

  3. Organize your cleaning bottles and containers under the sink.
Pull everything out from under the sink. Toss these items: old stiff sponges that have seen better days; an excess of old rags -- just keep a few in a container; and mismatched or damaged rubber gloves. Pay attention to what can and shouldn't go in garbage or recycling, and dispose of it properly.

  4. Acquire a flatware organizer.
Whether it's a simple, old-school plastic organizer or something more attractive and trendier, a flat, expandable design probably works best for sliding into your drawer and for organizing your flatware. You might prefer a caddy, particularly if you're minimalist, to hold settings of three utensils for four persons.

  5. Use a plastic bag dispenser.
If you use multiple sizes of plastic bags, a dispenser may not work. But if you use principally one size, a sleek metal dispenser can be mounted on the wall and will eliminate the need for storing some boxes of bags in your cabinets or drawers.

  6. Put your most-used items on a rolling cart.
A rolling cart can be moved around to where you need it. It can also hold your most-used items so they're within easy reach and not cluttering the counter.

  7. Install cabinet racks.
Racks in the cabinet will increase your storage space without forcing you to constantly be moving stuff around. You'll find you can stack dishes much easier, and cabinets will look neater.

  8. Clear out the pantry.
You can probably eliminate a quarter of the items in your pantry. Get rid of old or expired boxes and cans. Hang an organizer from the pantry door to increase shelf space.
