Birdwatching Livingston County

Birdwatching is a safe, wonderful outdoor activity that can be enjoyed all year long, and there are tons of resources available to help new enthusiasts enjoy the hobby.   1. Brighton Recreation Area – 6360 Chilson Rd., Howell, MI 48843
    The Brighton Recreation Area features nearly 5,000 acres of outdoor space to explore. Following the marked trails is the ideal way to explore the area and find the best spots for birdwatching. The wide variety of ecosystems at Brighton Recreation Area makes it one of the best places in Livingston County for finding a diverse selection of birds.

  2. Huron Meadows Metropark – 8765 Hammel Rd., Brighton, MI 48116
    With a mix of water features, rolling meadows, and thick forests, Huron Meadows Metropark attracts various bird species. On the western edge of the park, you will find a trail that runs along the Huron River, and this is a prime location for spotting waterfowl. The forests here also attract multiple species of owls and warblers.

  3. Howell Nature Center – 1005 Triangle Lake Rd., Howell, MI 48843
    In addition to being a popular place for educational camps for kids and a center for wildlife rehabilitation, Howell Nature Center is a great place to go birdwatching. If you're searching for hawks, this is a great place to find them. There are also many nature-based activities for kids, making this a perfect destination for a family outing.

  4. Lutz County Park – Lutz Rd., Linden, MI 48451
    There are so many wonderful parks near Livingston County, and Lutz County Park is a prime location to spot birds in a peaceful, beautiful natural setting. The land here was once part of a farm, which has since been converted into a 300-acre park. Many species of cranes visit this park during their annual migration.

  5. Deerfield Hills Nature Area – 6519 Cohoctah Rd., Fenton, MI 48430
    Deerfield Hills Nature Area
    is a local favorite with a waterfront location surrounded by beautifully preserved wetlands. You will find waterfowl here throughout the year, along with a diverse group of different species that make seasonal visits to the area. If you're looking for a natural space that offers a different birdwatching experience during every season, Deerfield Hills Nature Area is the perfect place for repeat visits.

  6. Island Lake Recreation Area – 6301 Kensington Rd., Brighton, MI 48116
    Centered around a large lake surrounded by flowery meadows and lush forests, Island Lake Recreation Area is a popular destination for enjoying a wide variety of outdoor hobbies. More than 150 different species of birds have been spotted here over the years, and this is one of the busiest places in Livingston County for birdwatching. Visiting on a weekday morning is a great way to beat the crowds.

  7. Fillmore County Park – 7315 McClements Rd., Brighton, MI 48114
    With its park ground breaking in 2019, Fillmore County Park is one of the newer parks on our list! The land for this park was bequeathed to Livingston County by Raymond Fillmore to create a county park of 198 acres. Explore the grounds on the 5k trail and of course, keep your eyes peeled for birds during your walk.
