Fall Decorating

Fall offers so many opportunities to celebrate the change of seasons by changing things around in our homes. Subtle or striking, these changes are easily achieved by bringing fall outdoor colors and accents inside your home. Start at the porch and the front door, and work your way through the home. Our REALTORS® recommend making these seasonal decor changes, not only to get you in the mood for fall fun but also to attract attention if you're planning to sell your home.

Get started with these fall decorating tips.

  1. Bring out the pumpkins.
Nothing says fall like an abundance of our favorite fall fruit, the great American pumpkin. How do you make your front porch stand out when there are masses of pumpkins on display up and down the street? Go for a fresh look with the white variety, and play around with an arrangement of terra cotta planters cascading with greenery. The cool greens will offset the orange and cream colors.

  2. Greet the season with stylish wreaths.
Maybe you're not having as much fall company as you'd like these days, but there's no reason you can't greet the passing world with a bold homage to fall from your front door. Fall wreaths have come a long way from the simple circles of autumn leaves that used to prevail. Make your own, or buy ready-made, but have fun incorporating the unexpected in your fall wreaths, from adding dried chili peppers or ornamental corn (artificial is fine, and will deter critters), to creating a simple and elegant shaker peg wreath. You can find lots of instructions for fall wreaths online.

  3. Jazz up bedrooms with a burst of plaid.
Plaid patterns have long been associated with colder weather. Place plaid blankets in bedrooms, so if someone feels a chill, a blanket is at hand. Otherwise, when folded and placed on a chair or the bed, they add a dash of cold-season warmth to the decor. You can go subtle with muted grays and browns, or brighten things with orange or red.

  4. Go truly mad for plaid.
Can't get enough of plaid? How about a dose of all-plaid everything at the dinner table? We're talking overlapping plaid runners or placemats, then calm things down with matching plaid napkins on plates, dishes with plaid motifs -- you decide how far to go.

  5. Use gourds and other fall dried plants for decorations.
So many dried plants lend themselves to fall decorating schemes. Favorites are gourds, ornamental dried corn, and small pumpkins. These dried accents also look well on the dinner or coffee table, in windows or on shelves, or in bowls on an island.

  6. Try some candles in dark hues for dramatic effect.
Candles can help you set the mood, which is usually quieter and more subdued in the fall. Recommended are deep velvets and purples, vivid greens, and maybe even black. These dark-colored candles create a modern look, especially when paired with gold candle holders.

  7. Make a splash with a change of pillows.
Change your pillows as you change your mood for fall. Fall colors are fine, but you can also tone down those oranges and purples with a textured, understated off-white pillow for contrast.
