Historical Landmarks Livingston County

If you've been exploring homes in Livingston County, you may be interested to know that the area has a long and exciting history. When our real estate agents show new homeowners around the area, they love pointing out some of our most famous historical landmarks.

Here are a few of our favorites.

  1. Frank J. Hecox House
Also known as "The House of the Seven Gables," the Frank J. Hecox House is a single-family farmhouse located on 76-acres. It was constructed in 1887 and transferred ownership several times before being purchased and restored by the current owners. The Second-Empire-style home with a pressed-tin-shingle mansard roof is a popular example of historical architecture.
  2. George W. Lee House
One of Howell's oldest homes, the George W. Lee House is a bungalow-style home that was built in 1911. Lee was well-known in the 1920s and 1930s for being a Republican leader and a prominent African-American businessman. He was also a novelist and short-story writer who had a postal office in Memphis named in his honor and even has his portrait hung in the rotunda of the State Capitol in Nashville.
  3. Howell Carnegie Library
Back in 1875, the Ladies Library Association of Howell was established. At that time, it was located in the back corner of the lot where the Howell Carnegie Library currently resides. In 1901, the local postmaster, W. H .S. Wood, wrote to Andrew Carnegie to ask for funds to build a new library, which he did. Construction began in 1902, and after a great deal of controversy, it was finally finished and had its grand opening in 1906. The library is currently operating and is a popular spot among residents. If you're looking at Howell homes for sale, you'll want to visit it!
  4. Ann Arbor Railroad
The Ann Arbor Railroad Depot was built in 1886. The rail line was affectionately known as "The Annie." It was a profitable link between Lake Michigan and Lake Erie until traffic significantly thinned after World War II. The state acquired it in the 1970s, and much of the main line is still in operation today. It's now called the Ann Arbor Railroad and is owned by Watco Companies, LLC. Next time you're in the area looking at Brighton homes for sale, stop by and take a look at this interesting piece of local history.
  5. St. Patrick Church & St. Patrick Calvary Cemetary
Initially built in 1838, St. Patrick Church was a simple log structure until it was rebuilt as a  Gothic Revival church in 1864. It was rebuilt again in 1961 and enlarged and rededicated in 1991. The St. Patrick Calvary Cemetary is home to some of the oldest grave markers in the county, including those of Civil War veterans. This is always an interesting place to visit and explore.

The vibrant history is just one of the many things to love about living in Livingston County. Want to tour some of the area's best homes and find one to call your own? We can help!
