Unfinished Basement Ideas

It's time to sell your home! How do you best showcase the space your unfinished basement has to offer?

Sorting out your basement and giving it a facelift seems overwhelming. Your goal as a seller is to show buyers how a space could be used. Our REALTORS® can help you freshen up your basement, claim back more square footage, and charm buyers with its many uses. Here are five ways to better use your basement space to appeal to buyers.

  1. Add or Brighten Up a Play Space
What better way to divvy up your basement's square footage than to add an exciting, energetic play area or freshen up the one you have? Get this set up by doing the following.
      • Define the area with an interlocking foam mat.
      • Use brightly-colored organizers to use up vertical space and keep toys within reach.
      • Hang bold wall art to contrast off-white walls.
      • Add lounge chairs, arcade games, and a T.V. for preteens/teens.

  2. Create a Custom Storage Area
Yes, your basement has always been the catch-all space for storing seasonal items, extra furniture, and miscellaneous items. Now, it's how you organize all of that stuff that matters. Build your own custom shelving system with lumber or pick up several storage shelves from the hardware store. Use as much vertical wall space as possible. Put related items together in clearly labeled totes.

  3. Build a Workshop
The new owners of your home will appreciate an area that's functional for hobbies or working on house projects. In the basement, the mess can be kept conveniently tucked away from guests or curious toddlers. And, it's a convenient space to keep tools handy. Get your new workshop set up with these steps.

      • Install pegboard on the walls for tool organization.
      • Hang ladders vertically, and construct a simple workbench with storage underneath.
      • Add an anti-fatigue mat.
      • Neatly tuck away paints/varnish cans on shelves.

  4. Make the Laundry Area Cheery and Functional
Cheer up the laundry room with new epoxy on an unsightly concrete floor. Remove window curtains (or use light-colored curtains) to use as much of the existing natural light as possible. Install a simple countertop over top of both the washer and dryer to make a handy space for folding clothes. Hang ceiling tracks and hang curtains (or modified bedsheets) to separate this space from the storage area and workshop.

  5. Potential Guest Bedroom
Hang pendant lights and paint the walls off-white so the space seems larger. Introduce a plethora of table and floor lamps and/or hang white string lights from the rafters.

Add a luxurious, light-colored carpet to the guestroom to make it comfortable, airy, and bright. If you're unable to paint floors or replace outdated flooring, don't despair; an area rug can center a room and make the space more inviting.
