Lakefront Homes - Griffith Realty

If you're in the market to buy one of our Brighton homes for sale, one of the area's gorgeous waterfront properties might top your list of possibilities. While there are many things to love about living on the lake, it's not for everyone. Here are things to consider before making your decision.

  1. Lakeside Living Can Bring Peace and Serenity Locals who live on the lake tell our REALTORS® how much they love the quiet serenity. There's nothing quite like enjoying a cup of coffee while relaxing and looking out over the water. It seems almost impossible to hold onto worry and stress when you're listening to the crashing waves and watching beautiful sunrises and sunsets.

  2. There Are Many Health Benefits There are health benefits associated with living on the water. Since there are plenty of opportunities for walking, biking, swimming, and boating, you'll probably also get more exercise, which is beneficial to your health and well-being!
  1. It's a Great Investment Local waterfront property is in demand, and housing inventory is limited. If you're considering purchasing a lakefront home as a second home or a vacation property, there's also the potential to make some extra money by renting it out.
  1. It May Not Always Be Quiet Although many families move to the lake for peace and quiet, it's important to remember that people who live on the water often enjoy hosting guests. There's a good chance your neighbors will invite family and friends over for cookouts and summer parties. This could cause extra noise, traffic, and problems with parking. Luckily, this is usually only an issue during major holidays and most residents are very considerate of their neighbors.
  1. You Could Have Extra Maintenance Costs A home on the water will often have extra maintenance costs that you won't find in a home that's even a few blocks away. There's also the possibility of flood damage. Your homeowners'insurance could be higher than it would be for a non-waterfront home, so you'll want to check this before committing to a home purchase. If your home has a seawall, you may also be responsible for the costs of maintaining and repairing it.
  1. Nature is Not Always Your Friend There are potential drawbacks living close to the water. The mosquito population can sometimes cause a nuisance, especially in the evening. While you can usually combat this with some bug spray and citronella candles, at times, it can be overwhelming.

Rising water levels can also cause ground erosion, which will infringe on your property line. Finally, waterfront properties are more likely to suffer severe storm damage than homes that are further inland.

Despite some drawbacks, most lakeside residents love their homes and the lifestyle that comes with it. For them, the benefits far outweigh the small inconveniences.
