Brighton Michigan Home Tips
It's tempting to crank up the thermostat when outdoor temperatures start dropping. Michigan winters can be challenging, but there are tons of effective ways to cut down your heating bill and keep your home warm.

Our REALTORS® not only have tons of cozy Brighton homes for sale they also have useful tips for keeping your home toasty when it's cold outside.

  1. Use the Power of the Sun
Natural light is visually appealing, but did you know that solar heat will also warm up a chilly room? When the sun comes up, open the curtains or blinds and let the light shine in until evening comes around.

  2. Put Curtains and Carpets to Good Use
Most types of window and door coverings will reduce heat loss to some degree, and investing in thermal curtains will make heat retention even more effective. Another trick to try is to secure or seal the edges of window coverings to the surrounding wall to trap heat in and keep the cold out. Remember to open curtains, drapes and blinds up during the day so you can catch some rays to help with heating. Covering floors with carpeting or throw rugs can get rid of drafts and keep your feet nice and toasty.

  3. Utilize Weather Stripping & Insulation
Seal air leaks around windows, doors, and other areas by installing weather stripping. Vinyl weatherstripping works well for areas that may get wet. Foam and felt are good for dry areas with low traffic. If your windows are old and drafty, putting plastic sheeting over them during the cold months will keep out drafts and moisture. It's also a good idea to have a professional contractor check out your home and pinpoint any areas that could use extra insulation. Adding insulation can help you save a significant amount on energy costs year-round, reduce pollutants and noise, and give you better indoor humidity control.

  4. Schedule Routine Furnace and Fireplace Maintenance
Making sure your furnace is inspected by an HVAC professional before winter hits can keep your family safer and warmer. Having problems fixed before they start saves a lot of hassle and increases energy efficiency. Replace your furnace filters at least once a month to increase efficiency and improve air quality in your home.  If you use a fireplace or wood stove, be sure to have it thoroughly cleaned and inspected before winter and stock up on plenty of wood.

  5. Turn the Thermostat Down While You're Asleep or Away
You can save 5 to 15 percent on your heating bills annually by turning your thermostat down 10 to 15 degrees while you're away from home or asleep. Better yet, invest in a programmable thermostat that does the work for you. A programmable thermostat also allows you to set it to turn on before you wake or return so you come home to a comfy house.

  6. Change the Direction of Ceiling Fans
One of the easiest ways to help make your home warmer is by running your ceiling fans clockwise. That way, the warm air that rises to the top of the room is pushed down.

  7. Layer Clothes and Blankets
Stay warm by layering with warm clothes and extra blankets. Thermal underwear, long-sleeved shirts, flannel pajamas, and cozy socks and slippers will keep body heat in and help you beat the cold.
