Greening Up Howell
Inspired by portable parks gaining popularity in urban European cities, the idea to make temporary green spaces accessible to Howell residents and visitors resulted from local government staff attending the International Placemaking Conference in Amsterdam. Officials and retailers both saw a need to make Howell more suitable for warm weather outdoor activities, and this opportunity seemed like the perfect answer. Through a combination of crowdfunding and the support of various local businesses, the Pop-Up Park Project became a reality for the city.
What's a Pop-Up Park?
Since Howell doesn't have an abundance of permanent outdoor green spaces for public use, the city decided to get creative in search of a solution. The mobile, Pop-Up Park provides a temporary green space that can be enjoyed much like a traditional park for outings, children's activities, and even special events. The park can be set up in various locations using a sizeable artificial grass carpet. The Pop-Up Park has seating to accommodate guests and plenty of room for picnicking or just lounging. The park also features activities for the kids and a one of a kind design on the "grass."
Join the Fun
Howell's newest park was launched earlier this spring and will be popping up throughout the downtown area during the remainder of the warm season. Special events and promotions involving the Pop-Up Park are scheduled now until late September. Enhancing our already strong sense of community, the Pop-Up Park has already brought residents and visitors alike together for entertainment, socializing, and fun.
